Social Media Optimization

Social media optimization (SMO) is a set of techniques for generating publicity, brand awareness, and traffic on a website through social media, online portals, community websites, and user-generated content. Methods of SMO may include: RSS feeds, social news buttons, blogging, microblogging, and joining online networks and portals where people connect and share valuable information.

SMO answers the following questions: How do I get more people to advocate for my brand? How do I engage with consumers through the media they use? How do I build a community around my brand? How do I become an information provider for consumers, giving them value instead of a sales pitch?

Our process focuses on the following components to help you establish your social media presence:

  1. Increasing linkability – Blogs, whitepapers, content aggregation, and many other site features can increase your site’s connectivity with other relevant content providers.
  2. Tagging the content on your site and using social bookmarking to promote your site pages
  3. Creating a rewards program for inbound links – Inbound links are the holy grail of SEO. To encourage more inbound links, create a rewards system. For example, list all the recent linked blogs on your site to motivate bloggers to mention you.
  4. Making your content travel – Optimizing your site is not enough. Make your site’s portable content (videos, images, whitepapers, PDFs, podcasts) travel to other networks and portals and appear on other blogs and sites. The farther your content travels, the more links you drive to the side.
  5. Engaging in mash-ups – Let others use your content when they properly reference the content and link it to your site. Turn your content into widgets and plug-ins available for download. Syndicating your site’s content drives more people to your site.
  6. Connecting and rewarding your active visitors
  7. We evaluate how well you work with your audience and whether you reward them for spreading your company’s message. Some companies write thank-you letters; others send gift certificates. We see how you can establish and maintain connections with your audience, and offer ways to improve it.

Newsroom Building

A Social Media Newsroom is similar to a traditional online newsroom in that it lists media coverage, news releases, events, media contact information, and so forth. But it also includes many social media elements. Here are the main elements:

  • A section offering links or PDFs to major media coverage
  • A section listing links to traditional or social media press releases
  • Sections for events and other industry-specific sections (e.g., a book review section for authors)
  • A multimedia section containing downloadable items such as logos, book cover art, PDF documents (press kits, sales sheets), podcasts, videocasts, book trailers, downloadable promotional material, etc.
  • Bios on each key person in the company, along with links to their social or business networking profiles (LinkedIn, MySpace, Second Life, etc.)
  • Purpose-built del.icio.us pages
  • RSS feeds that allow subscriptions to different sections of the room (media coverage, news releases) or to the entire room
  • A way for readers to share the content of the site via email or by posting on social bookmarking indexes (del.icio.us, Digg)
  • Instant message indicators for key media contacts using AIM, Yahoo Messaging, MSN, Skype, etc.
  • Ability to search the site or the web using Google or Technorati
  • Links to other blogs or websites relevant to your message
  • Technorati tag clouds
